Head of U.S. Central Command says 12 U.S. service members killed, 15 wounded in Kabul attack

WASHINGTON, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — The head of U.S. Central Command confirmed Thursday that 12 U.S. service members were killed in an attack at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan earlier in the day, while another 15 were wounded.

Kenneth McKenzie, commander of the U.S. Central Command, told reporters during a press conference at the Defense Department that two bomb attacks happened in the morning in the Afghan capital, one at the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport, which was followed by another one at the adjacent Baron Hotel.

“At this time, we know that 12 U.S. service members have been killed in the attack, and 15 more service members have been injured,” said McKenzie.

McKenzie said the attack at the Abbey Gate involved a suicide bomber and was followed “by a number of ISIS gunmen who opened fire on civilians and military forces.” He said details about the Baron Hotel attack were not immediately available.

“We are working very hard right now to determine attribution, to determine who is associated with this cowardly attack and we’re prepared to take action against them,” the commander said.
Unconfirmed reports said at least 40 dead bodies and 120 wounded were transferred to Kabul hospitals.Gun firing could still be heard as of 8:30 p.m. local time, reported Tolo News TV, citing witnesses.

The report said several armed militants were involved in the complex attack.Thousands of U.S. and coalition forces soldiers were stationed inside the airport while Taliban members provided security for the outside of the facility.

Unofficial sources said the attack was launched by Islamic State (IS) militants.The Taliban condemned the bombing outside Kabul airport, saying it happened at an area where U.S. forces are responsible for security.Some Taliban guards were believed to be among the injured, according to reports.

The bombings came after Western nations warned of a terrorist attack on the airport as thousands of people gathered waiting for evacuation flights to leave the country.
At least 90,000 people have been evacuated from Kabul airport since Aug. 14, one day before the Taliban captured Kabul. The airlifting process is expected to complete on Aug. 31.
