Sri Lanka reports 11 deaths from road crashes after travel restriction lifted

COLOMBO, June 22 (Xinhua) — The Sri Lankan Police said on Tuesday that 11 people have died from road accidents within the past 24 hours after authorities lifted a month-long nationwide travel restriction on Monday.

Police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said six motorcyclists, two cyclists, two pedestrians and a helper of a lorry were among those who have been killed in the accidents across the country.

Rohana urged motorists to drive safely.
Sri Lankan authorities on Monday lifted a nationwide travel restriction which was imposed in May as the country faced a third wave of the COVID-19 outbreak with the detection of new variants.

However, the nationwide travel restriction will be re-imposed again on June 23 at 10:00 p.m. and will be lifted on June 25 at 4:00 a.m. local time. Enditem
