Brent crude price reaches 100 U.S. dollars due to Mideast tensions
International benchmark Brent crude rose to the highest level in two months, reaching 100 U.S. dollars per barrel on Thursday morning after two Saudi oil tankers were hit in the Red Sea.
Brent crude for September delivery climbed to 100.28 dollars per barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange, up 6.21 dollars, or 6.6 percent, from the previous settlement.
Meanwhile, the West Texas Intermediate for September delivery reached 91.61 dollars per barrel at one point, up 4.78 dollars, or 5.5 percent on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Chinese mathematicians Deng Yu, Wang Hong awarded Fields Medals
Chinese mathematicians Deng Yu and Wang Hong were awarded the Fields Medals at the opening ceremony of the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians held here on Thursday, marking the first time Chinese mathematicians have won the prestigious honor.
The other recipients of the 2026 Fields Medals are American John Pardon and Canada's Jacob Tsimerman.
The Fields Medal is a top international mathematics prize awarded every four years to two to four young researchers under the age of 40 in recognition of their outstanding mathematical achievements in existing work and their promise of future achievement.
Trump threatens "major military punishment" on Iran, Houthis if attacks on ships continue
U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that Yemen's Houthi group and Iran would face "major military punishment" if the Houthis continue attacking ships.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said he was "very disappointed" with the Houthis, accusing the group of "shooting at two Saudi Arabian ships last night."
The United States would hold Iran responsible if the attacks continue, he said.
EU fines Google 890 mln euros over search bias, Play Store restrictions
The European Commission fined Google 890 million euros (about 1.02 billion U.S. dollars) on Thursday for breaching the European Union's Digital Markets Act by favoring its own services in search results and preventing app developers from directing users to cheaper offers outside its Play Store.
The EU executive imposed a 430 million euro (about 491 million dollars) fine over the restrictions on app developers and a separate 460 million euro (about 525 million dollars) penalty for self-preferencing in search results.
It ordered Google to end both practices within 60 days.
