Portugal condemns Israeli strike on Doha, urges de-escalation
LISBON, Sept.10 (Xinhua) — Portugal has condemned Israel’s strike in the Qatari capital of Doha, saying it violated the country’s sovereignty and risked further escalation of violence in the region.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X Tuesday night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it condemns the Israeli strike in Doha, which violated Qatar’s sovereignty and risked further violence escalation. “We stress that an immediate ceasefire and release of hostages are urgent. A two-state solution remains crucial for lasting peace,” it added.
Several European nations, including France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain, also condemned Tuesday’s Israeli strike in Doha. According to Qatari and Hamas sources, the attack killed at least six people, including five Hamas members and one Qatari police officer.
Hamas said the victims included the son of senior negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, his chief of staff, and three bodyguards. The Qatari government confirmed the death of a police officer and reported several injuries among its security forces.
The Palestinian group also said the airstrike targeted Hamas officials who were taking part in ceasefire negotiations with Israel over the Gaza conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation was carried out in retaliation for a shooting in Jerusalem on Monday, when two Palestinians from the occupied West Bank opened fire at a bus stop, killing six people. Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for that attack on Tuesday. ■
