Bangladesh to block unauthorized mobile phones from Dec. 16

DHAKA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) — The Bangladeshi interim government has decided to block unauthorized mobile handsets starting from Dec. 16 of this year, Bangladeshi Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb has said.

The decision aimed to stop illegal import of handsets, prevent the use of unregistered devices, and shield local and foreign manufacturers in the country from unfair competition, Taiyeb said on Wednesday.

According to Taiyeb, handsets that are already in use and lack authorization will not be affected, protecting current users from any sudden service interruption.

He also said that it will help diminish the prevalence of counterfeit handsets in the market.
