စက်တင်ဘာ ၂၂ ရက်ညက စတင်ပြီး စက်တင်ဘာ ၂၃ ရက်မနက်အထိ အဆက်မပြတ်မိုရွာသွန်းခဲ့ခြင်းကြောင့် မြို့တွင်းနေရာအနှံ့အပြားကို ရေနစ်မြုပ်ခဲ့ပြီး ယာဉ်အသွားအလာနှင့် နေ့စဉ်လုပ်ငန်းဆောင်တာများကို ထိခိုက်စေကာ လူမှုဘဝလှုပ်ရှားမှုကို လုံးဝနီးပါးရပ်တန့်ခဲ့ကြောင်း သိရသည်။
မိုးရွာသွန်းပြီးနောက် လမ်းများရေလျှံကာ မြို့တွင်းရှိ လူနေရပ်ကွက်များ၌ ရေကြီးနေသဖြင့် ပါ့ခ်ဆားကပ်စ်၊ ဂါရီယာဟတ်၊ ဘီဟာလာနှင့် ကောလိပ်လမ်းတို့အပါအဝင် အဓိကလမ်းဆုံများတွင် မော်တော်ယာဉ်များကို ဒူးမှခါးအထိမြင့်သော ရေထုထဲ၌ နာရီပေါင်းများစွာ သောင်တင်စေခဲ့သည်။
ဆင်ခြေဖုံးဧရိယာပြေးဆွဲသောရထားနှင့် မြေအောက်ရထား ဝန်ဆောင်မှုများလည်း ထိခိုက်ခဲ့သည်။ မြို့၏ မြေနိမ့်ပိုင်းနေရာအများအပြား၌ ရေများဝင်ရောက်ကာ နေအိမ်အဆောက်အအုံအများအပြားကို ပျက်စီးစေခဲ့သည်။
သီးခြားဖြစ်ရပ်များဖြင့် အဆိုပါသေဆုံးမှုများမှာ ဘီနီယာပါကာ၊ ကာလီကာပါ၊ နီတာဂျီနာဂါ၊ ဂါရီယာဟတ်၊ အက်ဘာပါ၊ ဘီဟာလာနှင့် ဟာရီဒီဗ်ပါဒေသများ၌ ဖြစ်ပွားခဲ့ခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။
“ဒီသေဆုံးသူတွေထဲက ကိုးဦးထက်မနည်းဟာ ဓာတ်လိုက်ပြီး သေဆုံးခဲ့ကြတာပါ” ဟု တာဝန်ရှိသူတစ်ဦးက ပြောကြားခဲ့သည်။
အိန္ဒိယမိုးလေဝသဌာန (IMD) ၏ အဆိုအရ ၂၄ နာရီအတွင်း ရေလွှမ်းမိုးမှုမှာ ၂၄ နာရီအောက်အတွင်း မိုးရေချိန် ၂၅၁.၄ မီလီမီတာရှိပြီး ၁၉၈၆ ခုနှစ်နောက်ပိုင်း အမြင့်ဆုံးဖြစ်ပြီး လွန်ခဲ့သော ၁၃၇ နှစ်အတွင်း ဆဋ္ဌမမြောက် အမြင့်ဆုံး တစ်နေ့တာမိုးရေချိန်ဖြစ်သည်။
အဆိုပါမိုးရွာသွန်းမှုများသည် ဘင်္ဂလားပင်လယ်အော်တွင် ဖြစ်ပေါ်နေသော လေဖိအားနည်းရပ်ဝန်းကြောင့် ဖြစ်ကြောင်း IMD က ထုတ်ပြန်ခဲ့သည်။

10 killed as record rains hit east India’s Kolkata
NEW DELHI, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — At least 10 people were killed, the majority of them due to waterlogging-related electrocution, as record rains hit the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, officials said late Tuesday.
The incessant downpour that began Monday night and lasted until Tuesday morning inundated large parts of the city and thus brought life to a near standstill, affecting vehicular traffic and daily activities.
Following the rainfall, roads were flooded, and residential complexes across the city witnessed waterlogging, thereby leaving vehicles stranded for hours in knee-to-waist-deep water at major intersections, including Park Circus, Gariahat, Behala, and College Street.
Suburban rail and metro services were also affected. In several low-lying parts of the city, water has entered homes and caused damage to several structures.
The deaths in separate incidents have occurred in Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netaji Nagar, Gariahat, Ekbalpur, Behala and Haridevpur areas.
“At least nine of these deaths were caused by electrocution,” an official said.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deluge — 251.4 mm in less than 24 hours — was the highest since 1986 and the sixth-highest single-day rainfall in the last 137 years.
The IMD said the downpour was the result of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
The rains also hit flight operations at Kolkata airport. Reports said more than 100 flights were affected, with 62 cancelled and 42 others delayed. ■
