Tottenham Hotspur wins Europa League final
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium on Wednesday night, courtesy of an own goal by United defender Luke Shaw in the closing moments of the first half.
Shaw was unfortunate to deflect the ball into his own net after a flick from Brennan Johnson. The goal, however, summed up what was a lackluster final between the sides currently 16th and 17th in the Premier League.
Neither team was able to take control of the game, and after Tottenham chose to sit deep in the second half to protect its lead, Manchester United failed to generate any clear-cut chances to equalize.
Micky van de Ven cleared off the line midway through the half after Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario misjudged a cross. Fernandes then fired wide, and United failed to muster another meaningful opportunity until deep into stoppage time, when Shaw’s powerful header was denied by Vicario.
The win secures Tottenham a spot in next season’s Champions League, while United miss out on European qualification–an outcome that will pose serious financial challenges for the club.

FC Barcelona coach Flick agrees one year contract extension
FC Barcelona announced on Wednesday that coach Hansi Flick has agreed to extend his contract with the club until the end of June 2027.
“The German coach will sign the extension of his contract until 2027 – for one more season – The act will be held in the offices at the Camp Nou,” confirmed a statement from the club.
The extension on Flick’s original deal, which was due to expire in 2026, comes after the former Bayern Munich and German national team boss has led Barca to this season’s La Liga title, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercup in his first season in charge.
Flick’s only disappointment was a narrow defeat after extra time to Inter Milan in the semifinals of the Champions League.

Neymar poised to return from injury for Santos
Santos received a boost ahead of the second leg of its Copa do Brasil third round clash against CRB with news that star forward Neymar is set to return from injury.
The 33 year-old trained normally with Santos’ squad on Wednesday and is expected to be given minutes in the second half of Thursday’s clash in the northeastern Brazilian city of Maceio.
Neymar has not played since suffering a left hamstring tear in Santos’ 2-0 home win over Atletico Mineiro in Brazil’s Serie A on April 16. He has made just nine appearances across all competitions since returning to his boyhood club on a free transfer from Al-Hilal in January.
New Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping Neymar comes through Thursday’s match unscathed and regains fitness ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay in June.

Wuhan Jiangda reaches inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League final
China’s Wuhan Jiangda advanced to the final of the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League, following a commanding 2-0 win over Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City FC here on Wednesday.
Cheered on by nearly 5,000 home supporters, Wuhan took control of the match early. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute, when local star Wang Shuang pounced on a poor clearance and curled a stunning strike into the net.
The final will be held on Saturday, where the five-time Chinese Women’s Super League champion will face either South Korea’s Hyundai Steel Red Angels or Australia’s Melbourne City FC.
