Man City, Chelsea and Newcastle book Champions League places
With the title and relegation long decided, the final day of the Premier League season is focused on the battle for next season’s European competition spots.
Five teams are competing for three Champions League places, while two others aim to secure a potential spot in the Conference League.
Second-placed Arsenal closed out the campaign with a 2-1 win away to bottom side Southampton, with goals from Kieran Tierney and Martin Odegaard.
Goal difference meant Manchester City was virtually assured of a top-five finish before kickoff against Fulham, but goals from Ilkay Gundogan and an Erling Haaland penalty sealed a 2-0 win and third place.
Chelsea claimed fourth place thanks to Levi Colwill’s 50th-minute goal away to Nottingham Forest. Enzo Maresca’s side secured a Champions League berth, while Forest will settle for the Conference League after spending much of the season in the top five.
Despite the 1-0 loss, Newcastle finishes fifth, edging in due to Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Barca ends season with a win as Athletic Bilbao says goodbye to De Marcos
FC Barcelona ended the season with a 3-0 win away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday in a game where neither side had anything significant at stake.
The match began after both teams gave a guard of honor to Athletic Bilbao defender Oscar de Marcos, who was making his 573rd and final appearance after 16 years with the club.
Two goals in just three minutes from Robert Lewandowski put Barca 2-0 ahead in the first half, with the third coming from Dani Olmo’s penalty, moments after De Marcos received an emotional send-off as he left the pitch at San Mames for the last time.

Real Madrid confirms Xabi Alonso as new head coach
Real Madrid on Sunday named Xabi Alonso as its new head coach to replace Carlo Ancelotti. The former Real Sociedad B and Bayer Leverkusen boss has signed a contract until June 2028, and will lead Madrid in this summer’s Club World Cup.
Alonso began his playing career at Real Sociedad, and after a successful spell with Liverpool, moved to Real Madrid in 2009, making 236 appearances across a five-year spell, winning the Champions League, La Liga and two Copas del Rey.
He joined Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, helping lift the German club out of relegation danger, before guiding the club to its first-ever Bundesliga title in a remarkable unbeaten campaign, in which Leverkusen also won the German Cup and reached the final of the Europa League, losing 3-0 to Atalanta.

China’s Zheng reaches French Open second round
Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen of China defeated former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the French Open on Sunday.
Zheng, the No. 7 seed, advanced to the second round at Roland Garros for the fourth consecutive year and extended her winning streak at the tournament to seven matches. She will next face either Alexandra Eala of the Philippines or Colombia’s Emiliana Arango.
