Egypt, Nigeria secure quarterfinal spots at Africa Cup of Nations
RABAT, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — Egypt qualified for the quarterfinals of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations on Monday by defeating Benin 3-1 after extra time, while Nigeria dominated Mozambique 4-0.
Marwan Attia opened the scoring for Egypt in the 69th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. Benin responded in the 83rd minute when Jodel Dossou capitalized on a defensive error to equalize and force extra time.
In the 97th minute, Yasser Ibrahim restored Egypt’s lead with a looping header from a cross. Benin pressed forward but was left exposed late on, and in the closing moments Mohamed Salah scored Egypt’s third.
In Nigeria’s comfortable win, Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, and Victor Osimhen doubled the lead five minutes later.
Osimhen added his second shortly after the break, before Akor Adams rounded off the scoring in the 75th minute.
