Oscar retires with heart condition
RIO DE JANEIRO, April 4 (Xinhua) — Former Chelsea and Brazil midfielder Oscar has retired from football after a professional career spanning almost 18 years.
The 34-year-old said his contract with Sao Paulo, due to expire in December 2027, had been terminated by mutual consent after he was diagnosed with a heart condition.
“I wanted to do more for Sao Paulo, I wanted to play more,” Oscar said in a statement on Saturday.
“I think I still had both the football and the age to keep playing, but unfortunately, this happened. Now I will retire and continue supporting Sao Paulo, continue my life as a fan.”
Oscar collapsed during a fitness test at the club’s Barra Funda training center last November and was taken to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, where he spent five days under observation, including time in an intensive care unit.
He was later diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a drop in blood pressure and heart rate.
“I am ending a career that took me to several places and practically crossed the world. I want to thank everyone for the affection, all the Sao Paulo fans who supported me since my return and during this difficult moment I am going through,” he added.
Oscar began his career at Sao Paulo in 2008 before spells at Internacional, Chelsea and Shanghai Port. He returned to Sao Paulo at the end of 2024, playing 23 matches and scoring two goals in his second spell with the club.
At the international level, Oscar earned 48 caps and was part of the Brazil team that won the 2013 Confederations Cup and reached the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup on home soil.
