Five U.S. Marines killed in military aircraft crash in Southern California

LOS ANGELES, June 9 (Xinhua) — Five U.S. Marines were killed after an MV-22B Osprey military aircraft crashed in the Southern California desert, the Marines said in a statement on Thursday, a day after the accident.
The statement quoted Maj. Gen. Bradford Gering, the commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, as saying that those Marines based in Camp Pendleton were killed when their plane crashed during a training mission near Glamis in Imperial County on Wednesday afternoon.
The crashed Osprey belonged to Marine Aircraft Group 39, which is part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing headquartered at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego of California.
The Marines are recovering the aircraft’s wreckage, and an investigation is underway, the statement said, adding the Marine Corps would withhold the names of those killed until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification according to Pentagon policy.
A statement released by the Marine on Wednesday said the MV-22B Osprey carrying five Marines went down at local time 12:25 p.m. Wednesday near the community of Glamis, about 185 kilometers east of San Diego.
Wednesday’ statement also noted that early reports from social media saying nuclear material was on board the aircraft were false.
The MV-22B is a twin-engine tiltrotor aircraft that can take off and land like a helicopter but transit as a turboprop aircraft. ■
