FIFA president Infantino backs Chinese football reforms
BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — Gianni Infantino has expressed confidence in the direction of Chinese football’s reform drive, reaffirming FIFA’s commitment to supporting the country’s long-term development at a moment of renewed structural reset.
In an exclusive written statement to Xinhua News Agency on Thursday, the FIFA president said cooperation with the Chinese Football Association had been a consistent theme throughout his decade in office, while acknowledging a renewed focus on grassroots rebuilding.
“Today, I am encouraged by the direction of the CFA under the leadership of President Song Kai,” Infantino said, adding that the emphasis on youth-oriented grassroots development is a long-term approach that FIFA supports.
Infantino, who was elected FIFA president on February 26, 2016, is marking his 10th year in office this year. During his tenure, he has visited China three times, while FIFA’s Forward Programme has provided more than 10 million U.S. dollars in funding to the CFA, supporting youth competitions, infrastructure and development initiatives.
“The passion for football exists at all levels of the game in China,” Infantino said, pointing to a record attendance at the opening match of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup in Wuhan last year as evidence of football’s enduring appeal.
“In my 10th year as FIFA president, I reiterate that FIFA stands by its commitment to further elevate the game in this great country,” he added, noting that FIFA will continue to support development initiatives, including assistance with domestic competitions such as the CFA Cup.
Beyond the pitch, Infantino also highlighted FIFA’s growing cooperation with Chinese technology companies, reflecting China’s expanding role in the global football industry ecosystem.
He noted that Hisense has become the first official partner of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, while Lenovo’s partnership with FIFA ahead of the 2026 World Cup will introduce AI-driven innovations aimed at enhancing officiating technologies, match analysis and fan engagement.
