Shevchenko defends flyweight title against China’s Zhang at UFC 322
NEW YORK, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) — Valentina Shevchenko defended her UFC flyweight title with a commanding wrestling display against China’s Zhang Weili, earning a unanimous decision victory in the co-main event of UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
The highly anticipated clash featured the top two fighters in the women’s pound-for-pound rankings, with former strawweight champion Zhang moving up from the 115-pound division to challenge the long-reigning 125-pound champion.
Shevchenko, known as “Bullet,” entered the bout with a record of 25-4-1 and showcased her technical superiority from the opening round as she kept her distance and focused on her wrestling to neutralize Zhang’s offensive threats.
The first round set the tone for the fight, with Shevchenko landing a takedown and establishing dominant top control. She maintained pressure on the ground, preventing Zhang from creating any significant offense.
Shevchenko’s dominance continued in the following rounds, while Zhang struggled to find her range in the standing exchanges or escape from the ground.
The fifth round saw a final effort from Zhang, but Shevchenko once again closed the show with her grappling prowess, securing another takedown and maintaining top position until the final bell.
ith a 50-45 unanimous decision victory, Shevchenko secured her 11th championship victory, tying Amanda Nunes for the most in UFC women’s history.
“This is what I call the art of martial arts. Against a super hard opponent from another weight class, but when they are here in front of me, they can’t do anything,” Shevchenko said post-fight.
Zhang congratulated Shevchenko and apologized to her fans after the fight, saying, “I will come back stronger.” The 36-year-old didn’t clarify her future plans regarding weight class.
In the main event, Islam Makhachev moved up from the lightweight to beat defending champion Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision, claiming the men’s welterweight title. With the victory, Makhachev became a two-division champion and tied Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak of 16 in UFC history.
