Jones: Salah apologises to Liverpool team-mates after public outburst
LONDON, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) — Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has apologised to his team-mates following his recent public comments, according to Reds midfielder Curtis Jones.
Salah sparked controversy in an explosive interview in which he said he felt he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club and claimed his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down.
The Egyptian international made the remarks after a difficult run of form for Liverpool and after being left as an unused substitute in the 3-3 draw away at Leeds United on December 6.
He was subsequently omitted from the starting line-up for Liverpool’s Champions League victory at Inter Milan before returning as a substitute in a home win over Brighton.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League match against Tottenham on Saturday, Jones said Salah had addressed the squad following the interview.
“Mo is his own man and he can say his own stuff,” Jones said. “He apologised to us, ‘if I’ve affected anybody or made you feel any sort of way, I apologise’. That’s the man that he is.
“He was positive as well. He was the exact same Mo. He had a big smile on his face and everybody was exactly the same with him. I guess it’s just part of wanting to be a winner and I don’t think he will be the last,” Jones said.
Jones added that there was no lingering tension within the squad and suggested the incident reflected Salah’s competitive nature rather than any lasting issues within the dressing room.
