Russia supports reforms of global governance system: FM
SOCHI, Russia, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) — Russia supports reforms of the global governance system and will work actively with China and other countries to refine and implement the Global Governance Initiative, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.
Speaking at the 22nd annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi, Lavrov told Xinhua that the Global Governance Initiative proposed by China can help change the situation in which certain mechanisms of global governance are subject to Western control.
Lavrov said the United States has blocked efforts to increase the share of Global South countries in the International Monetary Fund, while the West has abused its position in the World Bank.
This abuse of multilateral mechanisms to advance their own unilateral, selfish geopolitical aims is a disaster, he said.
The World Trade Organization needs reform, said Lavrov, noting that Washington has for decades obstructed the body’s ability to resolve trade disputes.
