Google to invest in submarine cable landing station in Maldives
MALE, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) — Google will be investing in creating a new international submarine cable landing station and network facility in Addu, the Maldives, the Maldivian government has announced.
According to a statement released by the Maldives’ Ministry of Economic Development and Trade on Monday, the investment amounts to tens of millions of U.S. dollars. The new facility will be capable of supporting the landing of multiple international submarine cable systems, read the statement.
The statement noted that the investment highlights the country’s potential to develop new sectors, such as cloud services, fintech, digital content, and technology start-ups, and represents a key milestone in the Maldivian government’s efforts to diversify the economy beyond tourism.
The Maldives are naturally positioned for connectivity hubs to help improve digital connectivity for the region, including Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and Oceania, read an article posted Tuesday on the official website of Google Cloud, introducing the project. ■
