Busquets relishing Miami title push as retirement looms
WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) — Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets said Wednesday he is eager to savor his time left in football as his team bids for its first MLS title.
Speaking ahead of Miami’s Eastern Conference semifinal against Cincinnati on Sunday, the Spaniard told reporters there would be no going back on his September decision to retire at the end of the MLS season.
“There is little time left, but I’m calm. We could be eliminated at any moment and it’s something that I’ve accepted,” the 2010 World Cup winner told a news conference.
“I’m enjoying it and I’d like to try to extend it. That would be a great way to say goodbye, but for now I’m just focused on what’s next, which is the game against Cincinnati.”
Inter Miami reached the conference’s last four by overcoming Nashville two games to one in their best-of-three playoff series while Cincinnati advanced by beating Columbus, also over three matches.
Cincinnati earned the right to host Sunday’s clash due to its superior regular season record.
“It’s going to be a very difficult match and they are very strong at home,” said Busquets, who joined Inter Miami in July 2023 along with his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba.
“They’ve spent several years doing very well, finishing in good positions. They have a very unique system with great players and it’s going to be a challenge for us to play away and against a great team.”
The winner on Sunday will advance to the conference final, with a place in the MLS Cup final on Dec. 6 at stake.
