Arsenal defender Gabriel ruled out for weeks with thigh injury
LONDON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) — Arsenal defender Gabriel will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a thigh injury while on international duty with Brazil, head coach Mikel Arteta has confirmed.
The 27-year-old limped off in discomfort during Brazil’s friendly against Senegal at Emirates Stadium last weekend and subsequently missed their draw with Tunisia three days later.
Gabriel has been in excellent form this season, playing a major role in a defense that has conceded just five league goals as the Gunners have built a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
“Gabi is going to be out for weeks,” said Arteta, who added the defender will undergo another scan next Wednesday to give a clearer indication of his recovery timeline.
With Gabriel unavailable, both Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera are in contention to step in when Arsenal host rivals Tottenham on Sunday.
Arteta acknowledged the significance of the setback, saying: “It’s clearly a blow because he’s our leader in our backline and to me it’s never a positive thing.”
However, he stressed that the squad has sufficient cover. “The good thing is that we have very good options and people have to stand up now and do the job,” he said.
There are additional defensive concerns for the Gunners, with Riccardo Califiori a doubt for the north London derby after withdrawing from Italy duty with a hip issue. The defender has yet to train since returning to London, though Arteta said he will be given every chance to prove his fitness.
“He has been carrying a few things,” Arteta said. “He hasn’t trained yet. Tomorrow we have another training session, let’s see how he is.” ■
