Thailand’s labor market drops 0.5 pct in Q3

Thailand’s labor market saw a slight decline in the third quarter of 2025 as widespread flooding in the country hampered jobs in the agricultural sector, official data showed on Monday.
The Southeast Asian nation’s labor force contracted 0.5 percent year-on-year to 39.9 million individuals in the July-September period, reversing a 0.02 percent rise in the previous quarter, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).
Employment in the farm sector fell 2.9 percent, marking a seventh straight quarter of decline. Meanwhile, the non-farm sectors expanded 0.6 percent, driven by the transportation and storage sector and the manufacturing sector, the state planning agency said in a statement.
The kingdom’s overall unemployment rate stood at 0.76 percent, representing around 310,000 unemployed individuals, said NESDC Secretary-General Onfa Vejjajiva.
The jobless rate in the social security system increased 1.9 percent, compared to a year earlier, and the number of quasi-unemployed workers grew 8.7 percent, fueled by expansion within the agricultural sector’s workforce, Onfa told a news conference.
She noted that controlling essential commodity prices to maintain workers’ purchasing power through pricing regulation and preparing post-flood support for farmers are key priorities moving forward. ■
