Mirassol beats Vasco to seal Libertadores debut

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — Carlos Eduardo scored one goal and set up another as Mirassol secured a historic Copa Libertadores group stage berth with a 2-0 away win over Vasco da Gama on Tuesday.

Renato Marques put the visitors ahead with a first-time finish into the far corner after Eduardo’s cross from the right wing on the counterattack.

Eduardo put the result beyond in stoppage time when he combined with Cristian Renato and then rounded goalkeeper Leo Jardim to tap the ball into an empty net.

The result at Sao Januario stadium means Mirassol, which is this year playing in the Serie A for the first time in its century-old history, is now guaranteed a top-four finish in Brazil’s top flight.

“The club has done an amazing job to be in the position it’s in today,” Mirassol defender Reinaldo said after the match.

“Everyone has worked so hard and this is a reward for that. We have a great atmosphere within the squad, and that helps to give us the confidence needed to perform well in games.”

While Mirassol can start preparing for South American football’s premier club competition, Vasco is in a battle for survival, sitting just four points clear of the relegation zone.

In Tuesday’s only other Brazilian Serie A fixture, Fluminense rose to fifth with a 2-1 victory at Gremio.
