Gremio parts ways with Menezes
SAO PAULO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) — Former Brazil national team manager Mano Menezes was sacked by Gremio on Tuesday after less than nine months in charge.
The decision came despite a 4-0 away win over Sport Recife on the final day of Brazil’s Serie A season on Sunday.
“I accept the decision and will always be available whenever Gremio needs me,” the 63-year-old said on social media. “The ball is round and will surely keep rolling. I sincerely hope better days are coming for everyone.”
Despite winning three of its last five games, Gremio finished ninth in Brazil’s top flight standings, having won 13 of its 38 matches.
Menezes oversaw 13 wins, 12 draws and 13 losses in his second spell as manager of the Porto Alegre Club, which began in April.
Local media reported that Portugal’s Luis Castro is among the frontrunners to replace Menezes, who was Brazil’s national team manager from 2010 to 2012. ■
