“Weapons” tops N. American box office on opening weekend
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s horror film “Weapons” held the top spot at the North American box office on its opening weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 42.5 million U.S. dollars, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
Directed by Zach Cregger, the film tells the story of a small town where a group of children from the same class mysteriously vanish into the night at the same time.
The R-rated title earned 27.5 million dollars overseas, for a global debut of 70 million. It holds an approval rating of 95 percent on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes to date, receiving an “A-” grade from audiences on an “A+” to “F” scale polled by market research firm CinemaScore.
Another newcomer, Disney’s comedy film “Freakier Friday,” came in second with 29 million dollars this weekend.
Rounding out the top three, Disney and Marvel’s superhero film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” took in 15.5 million dollars on its third weekend for a North American cume of 230.4 million dollars.
