FA probes controversial banner targeting Nottingham Forest owner
LONDON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — The Football Association has opened an investigation into a banner displayed by Crystal Palace supporters during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at Selhurst Park.
The banner showed Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis pointing a gun at midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, alongside text reading: “Mr. Marinakis is not involved in blackmail, match-fixing, drug trafficking or corruption!” Marinakis has consistently denied any involvement in such allegations.
Under FA regulations, clubs may face sanctions for offensive, defamatory or politically charged messages displayed on banners inside stadiums. The governing body will now assess whether Palace should be punished.
The incident comes amid heightened tension between the two clubs. Palace was controversially removed from the Europa League this summer due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, with Forest taking its place in the competition. Palace chairman Steve Parish described the ruling as “the biggest injustice in the history of football.”
Meanwhile, Gibbs-White was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham earlier in the summer, but Gibbs-White ultimately remained at Forest and signed a new contract. ■
