Neymar to miss Brazil World Cup qualifiers
RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Neymar has been left out of Brazil’s squad for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia as he continues to battle injuries.
The 33-year-old Santos forward has not played for Brazil since October 2023, when he sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
His recovery has been hampered by repeated muscle problems and he suffered a fresh thigh strain while training last Thursday.
“Neymar isn’t [in the squad] because he had a problem last week,” Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti told a news conference on Monday. “But we don’t need to test Neymar. Everyone knows him, from the technical committee to the fans. Like everyone else, Neymar will have to be in good physical condition to help the national team and do well at the World Cup.”
Brazil, which has already qualified for football’s showpiece tournament next year, will meet Chile in Rio de Janeiro on September 4 and Bolivia in El Alto five days later.
Real Madrid pair Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo were also missing from Ancelotti’s 23-man squad as he looks at alternatives.
West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta was recalled after being cleared in a betting investigation while striker Kaio Jorge, who has 15 goals in 20 Brazilian Serie A games this year, earned his first national call-up.
“The idea is to get to know players who I’m not fully familiar with yet and who can help the team do well,” the Italian said.
Chelsea is the best represented club in the squad with three players: midfielder Andrey Santos and forwards Estevao and Joao Pedro.
