Ecuador boss says team ready for Argentina test
QUITO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece has hailed the spirit within his team as it prepares for Tuesday’s home World Cup qualifier against Argentina.
Both teams have already secured a place at next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with Argentina leading the South American group standings and Ecuador fourth.
“There’s a very nice harmony within the group and we’re building a close-knit family,” the Argentine coach told a news conference ahead of the last day of CONMEBOL qualifiers.
“We have to value what we’ve achieved and the connection that we’ve been able to build with the fans. There’s a deep love among the people [of Ecuador] for these players.”
In the penultimate round of qualifiers on Thursday, Ecuador drew 0-0 away against Paraguay while Argentina won 3-0 at home to Venezuela.
Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi, who scored two goals against the Vinotinto, will be rested for Tuesday’s clash but Beccacece said the reigning world champions remained a formidable opponent, even without the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“It’s a group that has been together for seven years under the same manager [Lionel Scaloni],” he said. “They’ve developed a very attractive, sophisticated and genuine way of playing. They like to take the initiative and control matches. We must avoid that, but it won’t be easy.”
“We will also try to be the protagonists and attack while remaining solid in defense. It will be a big challenge for us because Argentina has many variants and is unpredictable,” he added. ■
