Mbappe scores twice as Real Madrid thrash Monaco in Champions League
MADRID, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) — Kylian Mbappe scored twice against one of his former clubs as Real Madrid eased past Monaco 6-1 at home on Tuesday to boost its chances of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League league phase.
The striker, who began his career at Monaco, put Real Madrid ahead after five minutes with a clinical finish from a through ball by Fede Valverde, before sliding in at the far post 20 minutes later to make it 2-0 at halftime.
Franco Mastantuono added a third in the 51st minute as Monaco left big gaps at the back, and Thilo Kehrer then turned the ball into his own net. Vinicius Junior made it 5-0 and Jude Bellingham added a sixth after Jordan Teze pulled a goal back for Monaco.
Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus also scored twice in the first half as the Gunners won 3-1 away to Inter Milan.
Jesus opened the scoring after 10 minutes, but Peter Sucic struck a thumping equalizer eight minutes later. Jesus restored Arsenal’s lead from close range after Leandro Trossard nodded a corner across the face of goal, and Viktor Gyokeres sealed the win six minutes from time as Mikel Arteta’s side maintained its 100 percent record in the competition.
Luis Suarez struck in the 74th and 90th minutes as Sporting Clube de Portugal beat Paris Saint Germain 2-1 at home to move up to sixth in the standings.
Suarez headed in the winner after Trincao’s shot was pushed out, having earlier given Sporting the lead before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia equalized with 11 minutes left.
Bodo/Glimt stunned Manchester City 3-1 north of the Arctic Circle to keep alive its hopes of finishing in the top 24. City, meanwhile, will need a home win over Galatasaray next week to secure a top-eight place.
Kasper Hogh punished poor defending to score twice in quick succession as Bodo/Glimt went 2-0 up with goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes. Jens Petter Hauge made it 3-0 before Rayan Cherki pulled one back for City, but any comeback hopes ended when Rodri Hernandez was sent off for a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.
Tottenham enjoyed a comfortable night at home to Borussia Dortmund, winning 2-0 to maintain its 100 percent home record in Europe.
Cristian Romero opened the scoring after 14 minutes and, after Daniel Svensson was sent off for a high challenge, Dominik Solanke made it 2-0 in the 37th minute.
