Solanke double rescues Spurs as City stumble in Premier League title race
LONDON, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) — Dominic Solanke scored twice in the second half as Tottenham Hotspur fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Manchester City on Sunday, leaving City six points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
City appeared on course for victory when Rayan Cherki put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, finishing from an Erling Haaland assist. New signing Antoine Semenyo doubled the lead just before halftime as Tottenham struggled to contain Guardiola’s side.
Solanke pulled one back eight minutes into the second half, although City appealed unsuccessfully for a foul on Marc Guehi in the buildup. The striker then leveled with an acrobatic finish from Conor Gallagher’s delivery, a goal that delighted Tottenham fans and their north London rivals.
Third-placed Aston Villa was stunned 1-0 at Brentford after Dango Ouattara scored on the stroke of halftime, just three minutes after Kevin Schade was sent off.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United edged Fulham 3-2 to continue its recovery under Michael Carrick. Casemiro opened the scoring in the 19th minute and Matheus Cunha doubled the lead in the 56th.
Fulham rallied late, with Raul Jimenez converting an 86th-minute penalty and Kevin equalizing in stoppage time. However, United had the final say when Benjamin Sesko struck three minutes later after a pass from Bruno Fernandes.
