Ter Stegen’s World Cup in danger after hamstring operation
MADRID, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) — German international goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery on the hamstring injury he suffered against Real Oviedo on Saturday.
The 33-year-old, who joined Girona on loan from FC Barcelona in January, was making just his second appearance for the club when he suffered the injury in the 1-0 defeat.
Ter Stegen returned to Barcelona for tests, which confirmed he will need an operation on the injury.
“Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be operated this Friday on the torn hamstring he suffered to his right leg in the game against Real Oviedo,” Girona said on social media, adding that the time he will be out of action will be “determined after the operation.”
The news is a blow to Ter Stegen, who joined Girona to get playing time under his belt ahead of the FIFA World Cup, but whose season could now be over.
“It is very cruel, Marc had just started playing again and was doing well and we were excited about his return to the national team. Now he needs recovery with calm and without pressure,” commented German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann earlier this week.
