Salah to leave Liverpool at end of season
LONDON, March 24 (Xinhua) — Mohamed Salah announced on Tuesday that he will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, bringing an end to his remarkable spell at Anfield.
The 33-year-old confirmed the news in a video posted on his social media accounts, saying: “Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell,” before adding, “I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.”
Although Salah signed a new two-year contract with the club in April 2025, Liverpool said both parties had “reached an agreement” regarding his future, allowing him to leave on a free transfer.
By his own high standards, it has been a difficult campaign on the pitch. Salah has scored 10 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions, putting him on course for his lowest seasonal tally since joining the club in 2017.
Off-field issues have also played a part. After a 3-3 draw with Leeds in December, Salah said he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club and revealed that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down.
Although there was speculation about a January exit, he returned to the squad after his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations.
It remains unclear where Salah will play next season. Liverpool said he chose to make the announcement early out of “respect and gratitude” for the supporters and to provide clarity about his future.
