France moves to No. 1 in FIFA rankings
PARIS, April 1 (Xinhua) — France has returned to the top of the FIFA world rankings for the first time in nearly eight years, climbing to No. 1 in the latest standings released Wednesday following a strong run of results in the March international window.
Friendly wins over Brazil and Colombia lifted France above Spain and Argentina, with Les Bleus reclaiming top spot for the first time since September 2018 in a tightly contested top three separated by only marginal points differences. Spain, which had held the lead since September 2025, slipped to second after a 0-0 draw with Egypt, while world champion Argentina dropped to third.
England remains fourth, while Portugal moves up to fifth ahead of Brazil after taking a win and a draw in its latest fixtures, capitalizing on Brazil’s defeat to France. The remainder of the top 10 is unchanged, with the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium and Germany holding their positions.
Morocco stays eighth in the rankings with 1,755.87 points, maintaining its status as Africa’s highest-ranked team. Senegal follows in 14th, with Nigeria (26th), Algeria (28th) and Egypt (29th) completing the continent’s top five.
Further down the table, Vietnam has recorded the biggest rise, climbing nine places to 99th after a 3-1 win over Malaysia, while Malaysia has suffered the steepest drop, falling 17 spots to 138th. ■
