China’s Wu reaches final at World Snooker Tour International Championship

China’s Wu Yize advanced to the final of the 2025 World Snooker Tour International Championship after defeating compatriot Zhao Xintong 9-6 in the semifinals here on Friday.
The best-of-17-frame semifinal was played over two sessions on the same day. The opening session started at 2:00 p.m. with eight frames, followed by the second session beginning at 7:30 p.m. to determine who would make it to the final.
It was the ninth encounter between the two Chinese players, with Wu extending his head-to-head advantage to 6-3.
The first session ended level at 4-4. Wu fired a century break of 140 points, while Zhao made notable contributions with breaks of 82 and 61. After the interval, Wu took two frames in a row before Zhao responded in kind to restore parity.
Wu found his rhythm again in the evening session, reeling off four consecutive frames to move within sight of victory. In the 15th frame, he scored a break of 65 to seal the victory.
The 22-year-old has been in impressive form throughout the tournament. Earlier, he recovered from 0-4 down to beat world No. 1 Judd Trump 6-4 and followed up with a dominant 6-0 whitewash over veteran Barry Hawkins, stringing together 12 consecutive frame wins in the process.
Wu credited snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan for helping him improve during training sessions in Hong Kong and Macao, and he believed it helped him to perform well in some details.
The other semifinal will take place on Saturday, featuring an all-Scottish matchup between 50-year-old John Higgins and his 44-year-old compatriot Stephen Maguire. The two have faced each other 27 times, with Higgins narrowly leading 14-13. ■
