At least 68 killed, 70 missing as Tropical Cyclone Seroja batters Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province

JAKARTA, April 5 (Xinhua) — At least 68 people were killed and 70 others still missing in floods and landslides triggered by Tropical Cyclone Seroja in Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said at a press conference Monday afternoon.

Those killed in the disasters were from the province’s districts of East Flores, Lembata, Ende and Alor, spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency Raditya Jati said.

The disasters that occurred early on Sunday also injured at least 15 people, affected 2,600 others and destroyed houses, roads and bridges, the official said.
President Joko Widodo has expressed his condolences to the victims and asked several ministries, the military, the national police and relevant authorities to carry out immediate evacuation in the area.

The country’s Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has said that the extreme weather such as heavy rains, strong winds and huge waves may occur in parts of Indonesia. Enditem
