3 killed in fire in Bangladesh ICU unit treating COVID-19 patients

DHAKA, March 17 (Xinhua) — A fire broke out Wednesday morning at an intensive care unit treating COVID-19 patients in a major hospital in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, leaving three patients dead, a senior official said.
Brigadier General Md Nazmul Haque, director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told Xinhua that 14 patients were in the unit when a “high pressure oxygen device” exploded at around 8:00 a.m. local time Wednesday.
Other than the fatalities, no others were injured in the fire, he mentioned.
All the ICU patients were transferred to another ICU unit of the hospital, he added.
“Three of the ICU patients were killed while they were transferred to another unit at another building of the hospital following the fire,” Haque said.
He said the victims were in critical condition and receiving life-supporting treatment through ventilators.
In May last year, five patients died in a devastating fire incident at the makeshift COVID-19 unit of United Hospital in Dhaka. Enditem
