China’s Wing Loong UAV swiftly joins Gansu earthquake rescue
BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) — China’s independently-developed Wing Loong-2H large unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has swiftly rushed to support emergency rescue work after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that jolted northwest China’s Gansu Province late Monday, according to its developer.
The Wing Loong-2H large civil UAV has rushed to the earthquake-hit areas to carry out rescue missions in response to the call of emergency management authorities, said the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country’s leading planemaker.
The emergency rescue-specialized UAV model Wing Loong-2H took off at an airport in southwest China’s Zigong city at noon on Tuesday.
The large UAV will carry out airborne emergency communications support, disaster monitoring and other missions to sustain effective and efficient rescue.
It carried the payloads for aerial monitoring and communications use. After arriving at the scheduled areas, it monitored and sent the real-time information on the condition of houses, infrastructure and other ground facilities.
This large UAV provided rescue-command authorities with real-time information in the form of images, voice and data from the quake-hit areas, thus helping them to command and dispatch rescue workers in a more efficient and precise manner, said the AVIC.
With its capabilities of long endurance in the air, Wing Loong-2H serves as an airborne communications base to ensure communications services by providing stable and continuous signals covering an area of about 50 square km. Therefore, it provides an emergency-rescue lifeline for both people and rescue forces in disaster areas, according to the developer.
A member of China’s Wing Loong large civil UAV family, Wing Loong-2H has been developed by the AVIC to serve the country’s demands in strengthening emergency rescue capabilities.
It is capable of operating in strong winds, and can serve emergency relief and rescue missions such as disaster monitoring, communicatio
