5 air passengers from London test positive for COVID-19 at Indian airport

NEW DELHI, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) — Amid rising fears over a new variant of COVID-19 virus, five air passengers arriving in the Indian capital New Delhi from London have tested positive for infection, local media reported on Tuesday.
The five passengers tested upon arrival in New Delhi were among the 266 people aboard an Air India flight on Monday.
“Their samples have been sent to the National Center for Disease Control for research and they have been sent to care centers,” a local TV quoted a nodal officer for COVID-19 as saying.
The Indian government decided on Monday to temporarily suspend flight services from Britain after reports of a new variant of COVID-19 virus there.
The suspension to start from Wednesday will last through Dec. 31.
Indian authorities have also announced a precautionary measure that passengers arriving from Britain in all transit flights taken off should be subject to mandatory RT-PCR test upon arrival at the airport.
On Tuesday morning, the health ministry said the COVID-19 cases in India have risen to 10,075,116 with 146,111 deaths.
Globally India is the second worst-hit country by the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
