China’s tech hub speeds up developing low-altitude economy

At lunchtime, Lin Miaoqing, a manager of a ramen store, received a take-out order in a shopping mall in Longgang District, Shenzhen. In less than half an hour, a food package was delivered to her customer by drone.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LIN MIAOQING, Manager of a ramen store in Shenzhen
“After packing, a deliveryman will come to pick up the meal, and then take it to the delivery place and send it by drone. Customers may worry that noodles will get soggy after a long-time delivery, which will affect the taste, but drone delivery is fast.

With the rapid development of China’s general aviation industry, various types of aircrafts, represented by drones, are flying at low altitudes in airspace, normally below 1,000 meters.

China’s technology hub, Shenzhen, also dubbed as “the capital of drones,” has become the pioneer of low altitude economy in the country.

Low-altitude economy is a comprehensive economic form, involving various low-altitude flight activities of manned and unmanned aircrafts and the integrated development of related fields.

China’s e-commerce platform Meituan has won approval for drone delivery operation in the airspace below 120 meters in densely populated areas of Shenzhen recently.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): CHEN TIANJIAN, System architect of Meituan drone department
“When you open the takeout APP, you will find out that some meals can be delivered by drone. Generally speaking, it can deliver goods within 15 minutes after you place an order.”

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): WU HANBING, Shenzhen Transportation Bureau
“In 2022, a total of 83 drone routes have been opened in Shenzhen, and there were about 300,000 drone flights for cargo carrying and other application.”

In addition to drones, traditional general aviation services such as helicopters have also joined in the “air traffic network” in Shenzhen.

Voice of WU HANBING:
“In the future, the sky in Shenzhen may be like this. Consumer drones, light and small drones will fly at the altitude below 120 meters. Medium-sized logistics drones used by logistics companies such as SF Express will fly at altitudes of 200 to 300 meters. Police, medical, commuting and rescue helicopters will hover at altitudes above 450 meters. In addition, there may also be unmanned aerial vehicles.”
