Egyptian, Turkish presidents hold historic meeting after decade-long diplomatic boycott
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met on Sunday with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the summit of the Group of 20 in New Delhi, India.
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency, the two leaders stressed the importance of advancing relations between the two countries to resume various mechanisms of bilateral cooperation.
It is the first meeting between the two leaders since bilateral relations turned sour after former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi was ousted in July 2013 and his Türkiye-backed Muslim Brotherhood group outlawed, prompting the two countries to expel each other’s ambassadors.
In late May, Sisi and Erdogan agreed to upgrade the two countries’ diplomatic relations and exchange ambassadors.
