Cuba readies COVID-19 mass vaccination drive for May

HAVANA, April 22 (Xinhua) — Cuban health authorities are getting ready to launch a mass vaccination campaign against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in May in Havana, home to over 2 million residents, the Ministry of Public Health said Thursday.
The head of the National Department of Primary Health Care at the ministry, Maria Elena Soto, said in a televised broadcast that Cuban vaccine candidates Soberana-02 and Abdala will be applied in several Havana districts.
Vaccination will initially target people aged 60 and over, considered the highest risk group, and later those 59 to 40 and 39 to 19.
Pregnant women, postpartum women and infants, as well as those who have recovered from the disease will be excluded from vaccination.
Cuba is facing a new wave of infections that has led authorities to reimpose lockdown measures across the country, including suspending school classes and closing hotels, rental homes, bars and restaurants.
The ministry reported 1,207 new daily cases of infection and 12 more single-day deaths from the disease, raising the total caseload to 97,967 and the death toll to 559. ■
