Bangladesh to resume COVID-19 vaccine registration after Chinese doses arrive

DHAKA, May 31 (Xinhua) — The Bangladeshi government will resume registration for COVID-19 vaccination after more doses reached the country from China, Health Minister Zahid Maleque announced Monday.

Due to the vaccine shortage in the country amid a delay in the arrival of shipments from India, Bangladesh suspended the registration for jabs in May.
Against this backdrop, the Bangladeshi government on May 27 approved the purchase of a batch of COVID-19 vaccines from China.

The approval came after Bangladesh began administering the China-donated COVID-19 vaccines to its medical students last Tuesday.
About 1,000 medical students from the country’s four top leading medical colleges took their first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine thanks to the first batch of China-donated vaccines.
Bangladesh’s drug regulator in late April authorized the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

Also with the support of the Bangladeshi government, China’s “Spring Sprout” vaccine program was launched last Saturday to inoculate Chinese nationals living in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh reported 1,710 new COVID-19 cases and 36 new deaths on Monday, making the tally at 800,540 and death toll at 12,619, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said. Enditem
