Host Cambodia loses to India in AFC Women’s Champions League challenge
PHNOM PENH, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown FC lost 1-0 to East Bengal FC of India in their preliminary stage match of the AFC Women’s Champions League 2025-2026 here on Monday night.
In the first half of the game, neither side earned a goal, and entering the second half, forward Fazila Ikwaput brought the victory to her East Bengal FC when she scored a goal in the 70th minute.
The Phnom Penh Crown FC is in Group E of the preliminary stage of the AFC Women’s Champions League 2025-2026, where it is joined by East Bengal FC of India and Kitchee SC of Hong Kong, China. The Crown will face Kitchee SC on Thursday.
Only the group winner will advance to the next round.
A total of 19 clubs are competing in the preliminary stage from Monday to Sunday, divided into five groups. The five group winners will qualify for the group stage.
The winning teams will then join seven of Asia’s top-ranked clubs in the group stage. The line-up already includes Melbourne City FC of Australia, Suwon FC Women of South Korea, Tokyo Verdy Beleza of Japan, defending champions Wuhan Jiangda Women’s FC of China, Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC of Vietnam, Bam Khatoon FC of Iran, and a club from the United Arab Emirates.
Together, these teams will form a 12-team line-up for the main tournament, which is due to begin in November. ■
