UN envoy deplores killings of civilians in Sudan’s West Darfur State
KHARTOUM, April 24 (Xinhua) — The UN secretary-general’s special representative for Sudan on Sunday deplored the killings of civilians in Sudan’s West Darfur State.
Volker Perthes, also head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), called for “an immediate end to the violence and an in-depth and transparent investigation,” according to a statement by UNITAMS.
“The UN reminds the authorities and armed groups of their international legal obligation to protect all civilians,” the statement said.
Perthes said that the UN in Sudan stands ready to provide aid to those in need.
At least 168 people were killed and 98 others got injured as a result of recent clashes in Kirainik area in West Darfur State, the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, a voluntary body, said in a statement on Sunday.
Militias also burned some buildings and police stations in Kereneik, the body said.
The clashes reportedly erupted after two herdsmen were killed on Friday by an unknown assailant, leading to a revenge attack by the victims’ families on the area, according to the Darfur Bar Association.
The armed movements under the Revolutionary Front Alliance signed a peace agreement with the Sudanese government in October 2020, stipulating deployment of soldiers to protect civilians in the region. However, the item in the agreement has not been implemented. ■
