Athletic Bilbao defender Alvarez admits testing positive after Europa League semifinal
MADRID, July 11 (Xinhua) — Athletic Club Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez has admitted giving a positive drugs test and faces a possible suspension of up to four years.
The 30-year-old who in 2016 was treated for testicular cancer and suffered a relapse a year later before beating the illness, posted a statement on social media, explained he had given a positive test for a banned substance after last season’s Europa League semifinal against Manchester United.
The defender explained the positive result was due to a treatment he had been using to prevent hair-loss after his sessions of chemotherapy.
“After overcoming my illness, I have been following a treatment against alopecia for several years and after studying my case, we have found that the positive was because I took a prohibitive substance involuntarily in my treatment against hair-loss.”
“It was a serious blow to receive this news, I couldn’t believe it, as never in my life have I consumed prohibited substances,” Yeray posted on social medial.
The player could face a sanction of up to four years, but said he “wanted to thank” his club for “its support from the first moment, while showing my confidence in justice and in sporting institutions.”
Athletic Bilbao in return offered Yeray its “total support” for a “human error” but said it would not make declarations while the case was ongoing.”
