NEW YORK, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) — The latest COVID-19 surge has hit a record high in the U.S. as the Omicron variant tears across the country, its open-door policy has exacerbated the global spread of the virus.

The country shattered daily COVID-19 cases record again as nearly 1.5 million new cases were reported on Monday, according to the latest data of Johns Hopkins University.

The seven-day average reached 140,000 people hospitalized on Tuesday, more than the previous high recorded during the surge last winter, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data. The new record surpassed the one set in January last year.

COVID-19 deaths are also spiking. The country is averaging over 1,500 deaths daily, a new high since mid-October last year, CDC data show.

The U.S. open-door policy has exacerbated global spread. The frequent flow of people in the country and lax policies on outbound travel are reasons for the global outbreak.

Overseas at U.S. military bases in Japan, virus cases surge, caused by the U.S.’ lax approach to administering its military personnel with COVID-19 tests before and after arriving in Japan.

During the pandemic, the U.S. has continued to deport undocumented immigrants that also resulted in pushing up imported caseloads worldwide.
