Aussie state gives more freedom to residents fully vaccinated despite highest daily case increase

SYDNEY, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Australia’s most populous state of New South Wales will give more freedom to residents being vaccinated with two doses in next month despite its daily COVID-19 cases increase stood at a record high of over 1,000 on Thursday.

The NSW government said in a statement on Thursday that the decision was made after the state hit the target of 6 million jabs, which is also the first step of the state’s out of COVID roadmap. Further freedoms will follow for those who have had the jab when the state hits new vaccination targets of 70 percent and 80 percent.
From Sept. 13, for those who live outside the 12 local government areas of concern, outdoor gatherings of up to five people (including children and adults fully vaccinated) will be allowed in a person’s local government area or within five km of home.

For those who live in the 12 local government areas of concern, households with all adults vaccinated will be able to gather outdoors for recreation including picnics within the existing rules, in addition to the one hour allowed for exercise.

The government is also investigating trials of certain industries in coming months, as a proof-of-concept measure to prepare the businesses to open up and operate in a COVID-safe way, the statement said.

Despite the tempting picture outlined in the roadmap, NSW, as the epicenter of Australia’s latest outbreak triggered by highly infectious Delta variant, recorded 1,029 new locally acquired cases on Thursday.

The NSW Health also reported three deaths, including a man in his 30s, a man in his 60s, and a man in his 80s.
The lockdown in regional NSW that was due to end this weekend has been extended to midnight Sept. 10, because of ongoing concern about the number of local transmission.

At the same time, the state of Victoria reported 80 new local cases on Thursday, also a record high in the current outbreak. Enditem
