“A lot of progress” made on resuming Ukraine’s grain exports: Turkish minister

ANKARA, June 7 (Xinhua) — Turkish Defense Minister HulusiAkara announced that “a lot of progress” has been made on a plan for resuming grain exports from Ukrainian ports, semi-official Anadolu Agency reported Tuesday.
Turkey coordinates the work among Ukraine, Russia and the United Nations on issues regarding clearing off sea mines floating off the port of Odesa and elsewhere along Ukraine’s coast, according to Akara.
“We are making efforts to conclude this as soon as possible,” the Turkish minister was quoted by Anadolu as saying.
“Everyone wants to be sure of something mutually. We are working to ensure that trust,” he added.
Given the current challenges in the global food market, Russia would be able to export the necessary volumes of fertilizers and agricultural products if Western sanctions were lifted, the Kremlin said earlier.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to visit Turkey’s capital Ankara on Wednesday for talks on creating a sea corridor for exporting Ukraine’s goods as its ongoing conflict with Russia has led to the blocking of its ports.
Ankara has said it is ready to take on a role within an “observation mechanism” if a deal on Ukraine’s grain exports is reached.
Local media reported that Turkey’s navy can escort tankers leaving Ukraine which will then pass through the Turkish straits to reach world markets. ■
