GLOBALink | Russia to open humanitarian corridor for civilian evacuation from Azovstal
MOSCOW, May 5 (Xinhua) — The Russian military announced Wednesday that it will open a humanitarian corridor for civilian evacuation from Azovstal plant. The Russian defense minister said any NATO vehicle with weapons is considered “legitimate target for destruction.”
The Joint Coordination Headquarters of the Russian Federation for Humanitarian Response said in a statement that the corridor will be effective from 08:00 to 18:00 Moscow time (0500 to 1500 GMT) in the three days.
During this period, Russian troops and the forces of Donetsk will unilaterally cease hostilities and ensure the withdrawal of civilians both to Russia and to areas controlled by Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday that any vehicle of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) that arrives in Ukraine with weapons or material for the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces is considered by Russia as “a legitimate target for destruction.”
Shoigu made the remarks at a meeting with Russia’s top defense officials, noting the United States and its NATO allies are continuing to supply weapons to Ukraine.
According to the minister, Russian troops together with the forces of Lugansk and Donetsk are controlling more areas of Donbass, and they will continue to fulfill their tasks.
Also on Wednesday, the Ukrinform news agency reported Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev will not agree to any deal that would lead to a “frozen conflict” with Russia.
Zelensky said that the Minsk agreements, which had put an end to the intense military stage of the Donbass conflict several years ago, proved to be ineffective.
