German president visits Rukla military base in Lithuania

VILNIUS, March 3 (Xinhua) — During his trip to Lithuania on Thursday, German President Frank Walter Steinmeier visited the German troops stationed at the Rukla military base as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization-led (NATO) enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup.

Steinmeier was accompanied by his Lithuanian counterpart Gitanas Nauseda and Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas.

According to a press release from the Lithuanian presidential office, Nauseda thanked Germany for its contribution to the security of Lithuania and the whole region.

He said that Lithuania was ready to host even more German troops to boost its defense and enhance the safety of the Baltic region.

Lithuania also counts on Germany’s assistance in reforming its air defense system, Nauseda told the Baltic News Service.

Germany has been leading NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup deployed in Lithuania and has recently added 350 troops to the battalion. Enditem
