China’s Gen Z: Aided by tech and big data, young farmers thrive

CHANGSHA, June 16 (Xinhua)–Chen Shuaiyu had the opportunity to work abroad after college graduation, but instead decided to remain in his hometown to be a farmer, thinking highly of the solid prospects in agriculture.

The 27-year-old farmer lives in Dingcheng District, Changde City, central China’s Hunan Province.

Chen is a member of China’s Generation Z having been born between 1995 and 2009.

“Since 2016, I have been using money I earned during my college years to open agricultural shops and rice drying centers,” he said.

In 2021, Chen founded a company integrating in agricultural distribution, social services, rice cultivation, processing, and sales.

“The sales revenue from rice reached 30 million yuan (about 4.46 million U.S. dollars),” he added.

Duan Zhao and Duan Yu are cousins from Heshan District in the city of Yiyang, also in Hunan. They are “grain farming partners” and also members of Generation Z.

After graduation, the cousins could have stayed in Changsha, the capital city of Hunan, but both of them chose to return to their hometown.

Unlike the older generation who rely on experience, the cousins focus on data. They conduct trials of pesticide reduction in experimental farmland to find the balance between high quality and high yield.

“When we sprayed the pesticide on farmland, we keep detailed records of the accurate dose and time,” Duan Zhao said, adding that key tools used in the trials are plant protection UAVs and smartphone Apps.

By comparison, they found that a 10 percent reduction in pesticides not only reduced the cost by 7 yuan per mu(about 0.07 hectares), but also avoided damage to seedlings caused by excessive pesticides, increasing production by about 10 kilograms.

“We have introduced the method to other farmers nearby,” Duan Zhao said.
Jiang Qiangen, 34, is a farmer in Tianzhuang Township of Anhua County in the city of Yiyang. He took the initiative to cultivate 400 mu (about 27 hectares) of “leftover farmland”, which was inefficient and unfavored for other farmers.

“In recent years, the local government has carried out a series of policies. As a ‘new farmer’, I take responsibility for avoiding the waste of arable land,” Jiang said.

“For the older generations, farming meant to hard labor, but for ‘new farmers’, farming is a creative and challenging career,” he said.
