Native American tribes concerned over impact of U.S. largest lithium mine on culture heritage
LOS ANGELES, July 11 (Xinhua) — The planned Thacker Pass lithium mine in the remote north of Nevada, the largest known lithium deposit in the United States, has drawn concerns from environmental groups, Native American tribes and local ranchers.
Myron Smart, a 59-year-old Native American tribe member, said that “Thacker Pass is sacred to our people. Some of our ancestors were massacred in Thacker Pass.”
Lawsuits were filed in federal court, claiming that the land is sacred ground for American Indians and arguing that the project will damage the local environment.
