Portugal expands purchase of military aircraft fleet
LISBON, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — Portugal and Brazilian aerospace company Embraer signed a contract expansion on Wednesday for the acquisition of a sixth KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, with the Portuguese Air Force becoming the first existing operator to order additional units of the aircraft.
The expansion includes 10 additional purchase options for potential future acquisitions by other nations. Portugal began operating the KC-390 aircraft in 2023 as the first NATO member to deploy the Brazilian-made transport plane.
The Portuguese Air Force currently operates five KC-390 aircraft as part of its fleet of military transport aircraft.
The contract expansion will also establish Air Base No. 11, located approximately 150 kilometers east of the capital Lisbon, as a training facility for KC-390 operations.
The aircraft has been selected by 11 air forces worldwide, including eight European countries and seven NATO members. ■
